An extraordinary school council meeting will be held on Thursday, at the latest Friday, at the Liceo Augusto di Righi in Rome . The topic of the meeting between teachers and parents’ representatives will be an unfortunate classroom debate initiated by a history and philosophy professor on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The episode involved, despite himself, an Italian-Israeli student of Jewish religion, forced to defend his reasons on what is happening in the Middle East in front of the class, against the thesis proposed by the teacher. A comparison, which took place on October 13, which the teacher wrote down in the electronic register: “Israel’s reasons explained by the student…”.
However, without failing to write – in the communication visible to all – not only the name and surname of the boy, which are generally indicated only with initials, since they are minors, but even specifying origins and religion. An improvident choice that sparked immediate reactions from the boy’s family, who reported the episode to the class coordinator and the school director, until it reached the regional school office.
The episode adds to other singular choices of the professor such as submitting Amnesty International materials to students on the “system of apartheid in Israel against the Palestinians” and “ethnic cleansing in Palestine”. The Righi issue is now in the hands of the regional school office. The teacher could risk a sanction for violating the institution’s disciplinary code.
