It is not the screenplay of a film nor the plot of a novel, but an absurd story which has as its protagonist the Barcolana , the most famous regatta in the world which is held every year in the Gulf of Trieste , generally on the second Sunday of October. At the start, at the helm of Maxi Jena , a 24 meter racer, there was no one who should have been there, namely the skipper Milos Radonjic and the reason is sensational. Two days before the race, on October 6, he was in fact arrested by the Police with an international arrest warrant issued almost a month earlier, on September 15, by none other than the Eastern District of New York, United States.
In the world, Radonjic, a 33-year-old Montenegrin, is known for having won many regattas, but for American federal agents he is above all a pirate, to be precise ” the Pirate of the Unknown ” , a name in code of one of the leaders of the “Tco”, an international criminal organization dedicated to drug trafficking and money laundering, as reconstructed by Corriere della Sera .
This Boston George from the Regatta transported thousands of kilograms of cocaine from South America to Europe and, according to investigators, it was he who coordinated and planned the transport of the cargoes from Ecuador or Colombia on a container ship flying the Maltese flag, but subject to American laws. An extradition request is now pending against him, made by the United States Department of Justice. His lawyer, Alexandro Maria Tirelli , president of the International Criminal Chambers, will try to oppose it, having cast the cross on the Friuli region: “It is a land that suffers terribly from the consequences of judicial cooperation, that between the USA and Italy, which has brought damage to our justice system. I am referring to the case of Chico Forti or that of a man with dual citizenship recently accused of abusing his daughter. In both cases, the United States has demonstrated its absolute unwillingness to hand over the two Italian citizens to our authorities. In terms of bilateral relations, I consider it unacceptable to hypothesize Radonjic’s extradition.”
Thus, even without its regular skipper, the Maxi Jena duly started at the Barcolana 2023. Having even placed fourth , however, they were disqualified because the race judges accused them of having started the engine twice, which was not permitted. . Perhaps because they wanted to escape too or, perhaps, because the worst never ends.
