The government has deployed Border Guard Bangladesh troops in Dhaka after violent clashes between BNP activists and the police during a rally led the opposition party to call a general strike for Sunday.

The border guards will help the local administration to maintain law and order, said the paramilitary force’s spokesman Shariful Islam.

The BGB personnel started patrolling key points of the city on Saturday evening amid mounting tension following clashes in the afternoon.

Scores of protesters, police officers and journalists were injured in the clashes during the BNP’s rally at Naya Paltan.

One police constable died in the clashes while the protesters vandalised and torched a number of vehicles.

Shariful said the BGB personnel beefed up security outside the chief justice’s residence, which came under attack during the clashes, along with Paltan, Motijheel, Ramna and other areas.
