Hospitals in Bangladesh have admitted 1,431 new dengue patients in a day, taking the tally of infections this year to 264,062.
The death toll from the mosquito-borne disease increased by 11 to 1,317 in the 24 hours to Friday morning, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
Dhaka registered 365 new cases and five deaths from the disease in this period. The number of cases outside the capital was 1,066, with six fatalities.
The hospitals across Bangladesh were treating 6,798 patients for dengue fever in the morning, and 1,929 of them were in the capital.
After a record 79,598 dengue cases and 396 deaths from the disease in September, as many as 60,656 cases and 328 deaths have been recorded so far in October.
Experts have blamed a prolonged monsoon and rising temperature, along with a lack of effective measures to kill the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the known carrier of the virus, for the outbreak.
